HF Chuck - Any good?

    HF Chuck - Any good?

    I have a Jet mini lathe and no chuck. I'm always looking to save a buck and saw this mini lathe chuck at HF:

    Is this thing any good or should it be avoided like the plague?

      You might want to do a search for "chuck" and look only on the turning talk. There is a lot of threads for chucks. I'm sure your answer is there. I don't know whether I would take your choice as its to small for a first one.

          A couple issues come to mind:

          1. No mention that the jaws are self-centering -- I'd guess they're not. Unless you specifically have a need for this (intentional off-center turning) it'll be a pain.

          2. Four jaw chucks allow you to hold square-end stock, 3 jaw chucks do not.

          Check grizzly.com or pennstateindustries.com for some more options.

              I have that chuck; I originally bought it as I thought it would work well for small finials. The one I have is not threaded in the rear of the taper for a drawbar and will NOT stay in the spindle taper with out working itself loose. The tommy bars that operate it are very small and bend quite easy. The chuck will basically hold nothing very well. The jaws are smooth. One of those things that I wish I had not wasted my money on.
