A bit of time today;

Well I got some shop time today and finished one that I had been working on. I am still experimenting with forms and proportions. This one is made from Big Leaf Maple burl and Bubinga. Talk about tough to turn! Wow.

Anyway here it is and comments are welcome as I am still trying to decide.

All kidding aside, it's beautiful. But then again, I've come to expect that from you, and you never diappoint.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone I do appreciate them. They are very encouraging to me. On this one I tried to maintain the line from the bottom to the top but yet I wanted to dramatically break it. I was trying to see if I could maintain a proportionate view while at the same time making the lid disproportionate. I have not decided yet if I like it or not.

If you can imagine what it would be like to lathe a roll of toilet tissue then you can imagine turning Big Leaf Maple burl. It is with out a doubt the softest wood I have turned to date with the exception of redwood burl but they have very different textures. I think I could have made a nice pillow out of these shavings. Very pretty wood though.

Brent, when I first stated seriously turning my wife suggested that I setup a Web site dedicated to my journey. She thought I would enjoy that as my excitement with turning was pretty obvious. If you click on my logo sig it will take you there. I have what I guess you would call a pictorial history of my journey with wood turning in the gallery section. I turn probably 20 hours a week and when I am not turning I am researching turning. As to what I do with all of the turnings, well the wife gets first choice of anything I make (her rule) she also gives them away as gifts as I do also. I also have sold many to various people who really wanted them. People I give them to as gifts show them to other people and the next thing I know I am being approached. I have also done some jobs for other woodworkers. As an example I just did 4 finials for a bed recently a woodworker I know that made for his daughter. I love to turn and people’s encouragement forces me to push myself harder and that is a good thing. On the other side of the coin though, if I had to do this for a living I would be very poor.

My honest opinion,

Craftsmanship is superb as always.
You still SUCK!

I don't know what it is Ken but something just does not excite me about this one. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with it, I am amazed at the craftsmanship.Especially that you got maple burl to turn that way. I think it's because I like the smaller more squat boxes much better, it just seems dis-proportionate to my eye. This is only my opinion and I hope that I did not offend.

Who knows though, I'll be the first to admit that I'm a moron who has no taste.
