    african mahogany

    finished this last night
these pics arent real goodat all, just quickly taken for a friend,
its darker, lil richer and a bit more shiny than appears here,
it did look even darker on the outside of the wood before turning,

i read somewhere that using lye (they said drano works?) will release the color in mahogany alot.. im not sure if this is also the case with african since it's not the same tree really as honduran

i've got 80bdft of this stuff from 4/4 to 12/4 and some of the grain pattern is really nice,id love to bring more color out.
i used liberon lathe polish and Hut wax bars(glass and high gloss)
sending it to my granparents in Fla, hope the wax dont melt off!)
that "lathe polish" did a nice job though, pretty easy to use.

I have been turning quite a lot of mahogany pens. I have found that a coat of MinWax pre stain conditioner does a good job of darkening the wood and bringing out the grain. I then finish with Behlen's wood turners finish. I can't say if this will work on african mahogany but it might be worth a try.

Nice work. Fine Woodworking Feb 2005 says to disolve 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 qt of warm water to darken mahagony.
