Anyone ever turn redwood? Y'know, like the kind you get at Home Depot or Lowe's. Just wondering how redwood turns, overall. Thanks.--Den

It's good to practice on because it's very hard to turn. It tears out very easily so you'll get to review your "light touch" tool presentations. I found a sharp skew does well and leaves a good surface.

Bill is right on the money with his comments. Redwood is very tough to turn. Does not seem to weigh hardly anything and it tears just by looking at it!
Here is a bowl I did quite some time ago and have not turned this stuff since. This was a burl to make maters worse.

i made a bowl or two with soem redwood i have had for over 10 years, way before i was into WWing.
it was VERY dusty, brittle, but looked nice(grain is not that interesting, totally straight, nothing like kens burl of course)
it also exploded on me twice.those were the first times i'd experienced wooden shrapnel from the lathe.no harm done though.i was off to the side. i wont bother turning it again probably. though it does have good resonance as a flute, namaste, matthew http://www.tribalwind.comComment

I turned some red oak candle sticks for LOML. I didn't have anything unusual happen. It did seem to be a very hard would, though.quote:Originally posted by autiger1
