    A New Bottle Stopper and A Question

    Here is one I turned today. It's mahogany with Myland's sanding sealer and Behaland's turners finish.

    The question is: Why does the kit require a 6mm bit when the mandrel is 1/4 20, OK the 1/4 20 mandrel screws into the 6mm hole, and the threaded post on the stopper is slightly under 6mm. You are supposed to screw the threaded post into the drilled hole. A -6mm post does not screw into a 1/4" hole, we have a bit of slop here. Have any of you run into this and how have you solved it?

      I ran into that too Dick. I had been gluing them onto the threads with CA glue. I was thinking of taking a threaded bolt the same size as the stopper threads and just putting it in a MT2 drill chuck. I got my mandrel at Woodcraft. I am assuming you did the same Dick?

          My problem: I can never get the turned wood of the mandrel. Even used wax on the threads last time didn't help.

              My thoughts exactly. I was thinking of dropping down to a 5mm bit and using a bolt the same size as the threads on the stopper as a mandrel. I don't know why Woodcraft sells an oversize mandrel, they didn't know either.

              It sure is nice to have a forum like this where we can kick things around and come up with answers and solutions and sometimes even an I don't have a clue.

              I don't understand why there would be a problem screwing the stopper off of the mandrel. Are you using CA on the threads when you screw it on?

                  It feels that way! Just using the mandrel and stops from Berea (which I think are the same Woodcraft sells). Might have to do with the bloodwood I was using, very dense but gorgeous!

                      If you have trouble getting out the mandrell, throw the whole thing in a bag and put it in the freezer. The metal will shrink enough.

                      I tend to epoxy them on anyway. It keeps people from unscrewing them. Exp. with the cork and chrome as I have had people loose the cup washer
