    I don't know either and agree with the wheel wear comment Ken but the results are better than if the alignment is not done.
    Even a blind hog finds an acorn from time to time.

      Think of the sharpening system as a triangle. Precise setup gives you the base of the triangle so the Vari-Grind jig can grind consistant angles at each of it's marks. This becomes evident when you begin to grind gouges with sweptback sides. Of course, if you are only going to sharpen on your own machine and never anticipate needing to sharpen your tool anywhere else, the settings really don't matter all that much. Plus or minus a half inch will not be all too bad. You will develop your own profiles, they would just be a bear to duplicate on another machine.
