    a crazy thought maybe

my finishes finally arrived from craft supplies today. got some deft wood sealer,HUT brown/white wax bars and some of that EEE paste/polish. do i need shellawax with the eee?it says theyre to be used together.

Ok so anyway..i got a wiff of the EEE and smelled alot like some car wax/polish i have in the garage.then looking at a tub of turtle-wax,it just lists Carnauba wax as an ingrediant(im sure theres other stuff in there too right)

anyone ever tried or heard of using car waxes on wood? it does say 'not [u]intended</u> for vinyl, wood, synthetic wood" so intended doesnt necesarily mean wont work, just covering their butts i imagine.
i think the car wax was like 2 bucks.

well like i said jsut a crazy thought, im crazy enough to go try it this week too

The EEE is really a micro polish using the wax as a carrier for the rotten stone that it contains. When using the EEE you should apply it by rubbing a small amount on to your work piece and then turn the lathe on and work it like you were sanding. Keep replacing the cloth with cleaner sections as you are trying to not only polish but remove the wax carrier.

It is my understanding that car waxes will not work due to other chemicals used in them. I have never tried but the question you ask seems to pop up quite a bit and the general answer is no.

Also you should keep in mind that wax finishes such as the Hut Wax bars are very susceptible to skin acids to on any piece you make that will be handled a lot the finish will deteriorate rather quickly.

Here is something from another forum about car waxes.

"Someone on this forum earlier suggested carnuba car wax beacuse it is tougher, but I had really bad luck with it. I never could get it to shine very evenly and it appears to actually take the 24k finish off of some cheap kits I had. Paste wax for wood is much better in my opinion. I actually use it on my personal pen that I use all day about once per month, but probably should use it more often for daily use items."

      and

"Car Wax SHOULD NOT be used on anything wood. I learned this from other woodworking endevours. Car waxes have a fine grit in them that's good for metal polishing but not for wood. Probably why you couldn't get a shine. You were actually scratching the surface."

I have personally used red rubbing compound and the white polishing compound in place of the EEE Ultrashine and sadly I ruined a couple of good pens using turtlewax. It takes the gold off and caused debonding of the wood from the tube.

      YMMV
