X-Cut Purple Heart

First pen turnings since last fall. 4 coats thin CA



This is a piece of contrary purple heart. Can't count how many times the blank blew up on me. Finally made an ebony center band on one half and when the other half blew made another thin ebony band with a new piece of ph glued in.

Nice recovery. Purpleheart can be a PITA to work crosscut (although, truth be told, yours is more angle-cut than crosscut).

Very nice. I did a similar center band except I used blackwood & the main pen blank was bloodwood. I really like the integral centerband because it allows a more robust pen diameter.

All I know of the wood was it was given to me by a friend at work whose son made a cutting board from this and he wanted a pen ... not sure what designates angle or x-cut but thanks for the info.

I have maybe enough left for one more pen if I try something different to keep it from blowing up.

Crosscut is where the grain runs at 90 degrees to the longitudinal barrel of the pen. Angle cut is done on a diagonal. Visual differences can be remarkable between either of these and a conventional long-grain cut.
