Nice recovery. Purpleheart can be a PITA to work crosscut (although, truth be told, yours is more angle-cut than crosscut). -

All I know of the wood was it was given to me by a friend at work whose son made a cutting board from this and he wanted a pen ... not sure what designates angle or x-cut but thanks for the info.
I have maybe enough left for one more pen if I try something different to keep it from blowing up.Comment

Crosscut is where the grain runs at 90 degrees to the longitudinal barrel of the pen. Angle cut is done on a diagonal. Visual differences can be remarkable between either of these and a conventional long-grain cut.Thanks all for the comments
