    Stupid is as stupid dows

Well, I went and did it. Wanting to turn my first bowl, I chucked a piece of mahogany and started to scrape away. The brand new face mask was sitting close by but I was just going to 'take a few swipes' so on the bench it stayed.

Needless to say, the gouge dug in, the piece flew out of the chuck, straight into my face. Luckily it only hit me in the lip. If it had been my eyes, who knows how bad it would have been.

As it was, took 6 sutures to fix and I was sore for a week.

Do you think that I remember to use the shield now? You betcha!

Anyone who doesn't use protection, learn from me.

However, I am LOVING using the lathe.

    Cheers,

    MikeR

    Thanks

Mike you made a point with me. I have only been turning a few months but I just got a face shield yesterday. I will be using it from now on. Sorry to see your injury but I think you did alot of people a service by relating you experience.

Definitely a good lesson to be had from this unfortunate incident. Glad it wasn't worse.

Ouch! A good lesson for all of us. I hope you can get the Christmas dinner in okay.

I vote for eye/face protection, along with hearing protection for noise, and respirators and skin protection for chemicals/vapors. Underestimating the dangers is foolish. DAMHIKT.

Nope, nicely healed so the ham etc will be no problem.

Thanks for the good wishes and yes, everyone should learn from my stupid mistakes.

I made a couple of ornaments for the front door this morning. I love doing this! Downward, into the vortex.....

Merry Christmas and a peaceful and healthy New Year to all.

                Cheers,

Merry Christmas to you. I too am new at turning and yep, no face shield but will buy one before I turn again. Sorry you had to get hurt but you have probably stopped a lot of us from the same experience. Thanks for that. You weren't stupid, just ambitiously careless like many of us.

Stupid or dumb, maybe. It's easy to get complacent. "I'm just going to make one quick cut so since the risk is low, I won't put on my eye protection."

I'm sorry to hear you were hurt, but very glad is was relatively minor.
