    MM and EEE

Just curious if anyone has used EEE after using MM on any of there pens or other projects.

From what I've read the EEE can take a 400 grit sanding to 2000, so would it take a 12000 grit up to 30000+?

PSI sells it. "EEE Ultra shine paste wax". Contains Tripoli powder (I'm know I'm going out on a limb, but I think they get EEE from Tripoli).

you are supposed to use it after sanding but before final finishing with either a polish or other. The guy that is in the PSI demostration DVD uses it and the results look nice.

I'm just curious if using it with Micro Mesh is overkill.

Gotta admit I'm kinda confused. The guy in the PSI pen turning DVD says EEE will take a product sanded to 400 grit to 1600 equivelent but sanded to 600 grit to 2000 equivelent. So it does seem the higher grit you sand to the higher EEE will take the finish but it doesn't seem to be a fixed multiplier ( at least to clear to me ). On the other hand it seems reasonable that there is a ceiling on how fine the EEE could go. I'm not much help, I'm afraid

odd, the catalog says 240 grit to 1200 or more and 400 grit to 2000.

That would be a 5x advance on both.

          I need more research.

Really, after MM'ing to 12k no more is needed.

EEE is Tripoli powder (a polishing compound) in a wax carrier. They can't use "Tripoli" in their name due to trademark restrictions or something of that nature, so they call it "EEE". Using EEE after MM 3600 probably doesn't improve anything. I've used EEE after MM 12000 and honestly don't see an improvement other than the wax in EEE gives a bit of a shine.

You probably know this already, but, MM grit ratings are not the same as traditional sandpaper. IIRC MM 1200 is close to 600 grit traditional sandpaper.

If you already have MM & are pleased with the results, I'd probably skip the EEE. (If you have a buffing wheel system, you will probably get better results with that) Depending on the wood, I don't see much difference above MM3600 on bare wood. Do, I usually stop at 3600 or a little higher on bare wood & then apply finish. I'll go up to 12000 when polishing the finish.

EEE - Ultra Shine is a cut and polish paste wax containing Tripoli powder (also known in Australia as Rotten Stone) an ultra fine abrasive. The polish is designed to be used in conjunction with Shellawax Cream & liquid or as a finish in its own right on plastics and some stone.

It can also be used by French Polishers after polishing and restorers to cut & polish old polished surfaces.

Many other finishes will also be greatly enhanced by using EEE - Ultra Shine to finish the finish. These include Organ Oil, Danish oil, polyurethane, nitrocellulose lacquer, French polish, spirit varnish, spa vanish, etc.

After I MM a pen to 12,000, I sometimes wax it with a good smelling carnuba wax, but I don't use the EEE myself.

After doing a bunch of pens I now sand to different grits for different woods. Something like a curly maple is worth doing to 12k, but wenge, for instance, isn't to me. Don't notice much difference after about 2k.
