    Salvaging a finish

I am still relatively new to turning pens. The first few pens I turned I used Shellawax. When I moved to making some gift pens, I moved to Myland's Melamine laquer. I have now used CA on a few pens.

I am currently finishing a pen turned from one of the stabilized laminated wood blanks. I am pairing the blank with a black chrome kit, so, I wanted something very glossy. After the third coat of CA had dried, I started sanding. I started at 180, 220, 320, 400 & then went through MicroMesh up through 12,000. I noticed a dull band once I got part way into the MM & started building a shine. The dull band happens at the fattest part of the pen (slightly tapered shape). I'm figuring I either sanded through the finish accidentally, or had some contamination issue.

I figure I have to resand & refinish. My question is whether I will need to resand the entire blank, or, can I sand just the area with the problem? The areas on either side of the dull band look great, I hate to sand through them.

Shouldn't be a problem to sand the whole piece a bit and start building up the finish again from there. I've had that happen a number of times. Just recently on a pen that I ultimately sold for $175.00.
