    Success...walking stick

I made this walking stick to give to my FIL for xmas.
The kit is from Craft Supply and the rubber tip removes to expose an ice tip.
The (3) beads on the bottom represent his 3 grandkids and the (5) beads on the middle his 5 kids. I duplicated this pattern with the grooves on the handle section.

Wood is Morado. My local dealer has a skid full of 2-1/2" square x 28" blanks brought in for pool cues. I love working this wood and will probably buy some more from him to make same for my dad.

Finish is beeswax followed by Claphams polish.
Do you think I should spray some laquer on it for protection?

Cool stick Brian! And a nice bit of symbolism.

        That looks great, Brian!

I started on a two piece walking stick some time ago, then got side-tracked on making a home-made spindle steady since the pieces were a bit long. Maybe I should look into the 3-pc hardware kit....

        Regards,
        Tom

Not sure if laquer over wax (hard finish over soft) is a good idea. Probably best to stick with the wax and re-apply it as needed.

Thanks for all the great comments guys. (EDIT: and Karen)
I hold this man in very high regard so I hope he'll like it. The wife figures he'll display it and never use it. I suppose that would be the best compliment he could pay.

Yes I just started. A few pens and a 2 piece hollow vessel that a local pro helped me with.
These were a challenge. I still can't figure out how to easily turn those connectors in. Might try these.

I also have a couple of natural flaws and a slight nick from a drop off the bench. May fill both...or not. Plus finish isn't great in a couple of spots. Gives it character built in.

Beautiful work, Brian. If he displays it, the only maintenance it should need is wiping with a damp rag to dust it. If it sees use, the oils from his hand will take care of the top.

Definately cool, and can be broken up for smaller lathes. I'm unsure as to the best finishing methods, spray laquer could be good, but is mostly a surface treatment. I think you would want something easily renewable.
