    Dust hoods

Anyone have pictures of thier lathe dust collection hoods. Yes I know there are some "store boughts" out there. Or does anyone use them? I'm not a dust freak, I'm lazy. My DC collector sits at the end of my lathe bed, and that 55 gallon drum holds alot more before it needs emptying than the little shop vac that I have sitting under the lathe. I'm thinking there ought to be a better way to collect at least the big stuff. Thanks Pat

I'll get pictures but I have a range hood from our kitchen that I removed when installing our microwave. The hood is your standard over the range sheet metal enameled hood.

I turned it on its rear end(for lack of a better term) and installed an 8"dia metal duct transiton in the fan hole. I transitioned it from 8 top 6 inches to my cyclone duct run.

It actually works remarcably well. I use it for my CMS and it catches pretty much everything.

I imagine it would work for a lathe

That sounds like the ideal CMS hood. Pictures!

I only use the DC for the fine dust, the larger shavings just fall down and I'll suck them up later also with the DC. Instead of a dust hood I use some of that flexible 4" metal dryer hose. I can bend it to where I need it most. Not pretty but works quite well.

I like Gerti just use one for dust collection when sanding. I bought a commercial one from Rockler as it was quick and I needed it badly when I was working with one particular wood. I don’t find them all that useful for collecting shavings as most of the time the shavings are long curls and they are coming at me! I have yet to figure out a good way of directing turning shavings so with a lathe, dust collection is just that.

Here's one (link below) I made that when hooked to my Delta 50-760 does a very good job at inhaling lots of what I used to.

I have the same one as Ken--bought from Harbor Freight at a cheap price. I use a wooden clamp to attach it to the lathe frame--works for both full-size and mini-lathe. I agree it does a pretty good job with sanding, a decent job at collecting fine shavings, but long curls typically fall to the floor in front of the lathe.

Do you have a link to the one from Harbor Freight? Did a search and didn't come up with anything.

                Thanks,
