Which Chuck is best for . . .

Which chuck is best for my lathe situation?

I have a Rikon 12" lathe that I do pens primarily. However I wish to turn some bowls from time to time. I was waiting on the Penn State Baracuda2, but it is now on back order until the middle of May, which will probably mean June. I will be packing/crating before then.

    Choices now:
    1. Nova G3 Chuck $144.99
    2. NOVA Precision Midi Chuck $119.99
    3. ONEWAY Talon Chuck $209.99

What is the advantage of each and is there one that is NOT recommended?

I will be taking it back to Japan with me in a couple of months. I do NOT have the bed extension, so no long spindles beyond 18 inches. I sure like the cheaper price but I also know that sometimes the higher priced is WELL worth it. Is there that much difference in the OneWay over others?

    Thanks for your comments.

I know this will breed argument but I am personally not a fan of Oneway chucks. The one I bought has more run-out than any Chinese chuck I have used. Also I am not a fan of the jaws as they do not re-chuck a piece very accurately. If I remember right the Rikon lathe has a spindle lock so the Tommy bar operated Nova midi chuck would not only save you a few $$$ but will serve you well. It is a nice chuck and all the Super Nova chuck jaws fit right on it. It is also smaller in width so it gives you just a bit more length between centers.

I have the Nova Midi with several sets of jaws and am very happy with it. I can't compare it to anything else as it is the only one I have used.

Sorry, I don't have any of the chucks you have listed.

          Thanks Ken, Dick,

That helps me make up my mind. It will save me a few dollars too. I will probably get one other jaw to go with the standard one.

          Thanks again.

Which Chuck is best for . . .

I just picked up the the new G3 about two weeks ago, and I like it very much, I also have the midi and the grizzly and a cheap one from PSI.
You have to remember that you need a adapter for the G3 so that ups the price about 25 bucks if you get it at Wood Craft like I did. I would'nt recommend the grizzly, the cheap PSI is ok but it has tommy bars and that leaves the midi. I've used it for some time but after using the G3 its now my second choice. I love the T handle on the G3 and the jaws open just a little more and all my jaws from the midi fit it as well. The Midi is a nice choice, I just like the Tbar better than the tommy bars..

I have the Barracuda2 and it's great. I ordered it from The Wooden Post, they had them in stock.

The included jaws are good for bowls and turning larger pieces.
I'd recommend pin jaws for your second set!
