My first turning - candlestick holder

I did my very first turning today. I'd bought a Delta Midil Lathe about 18 months ago when it was on clearance but never unboxed it until today. I'd beel cleaning out the shop and needed the shelf space the lathe was taking so I set it up on the bench. It was too tempting to resist so I did a candlestick holder out of scrap mahogany. I had a blast even though I don't know what I'm doing.

Anybody know what size drill I should use for the candle?

It's fun, isn't it? Not bad at all for a first try! Sorry, no idea what diameter drill to use. I guess tapers have some sort of standard diameter.

That is very nice. I use a 3/4 inch Forstner bit for mine.

Put some lead shot in the base of that bad boy

Since the top and bottom cones are "about" the same size. Putting a candle in the holder is going to make it pretty unstable. -- So hop on out to Gander Mt, or your local reloaders shop and pick up #25 of lead shot.. Step drill out the bottom with a rabbet deep enough so that you can glue a plug into the bottom.

It sure would be a shame to start a fire in the dining or sleeping areas of your shop

Thanks for all the tips. I'll have to build a sister for it soon. I need to get a couple of other projects first that have to be done.
