    goodbye sandpaper,and new lathe!

well my jet mini arrived today.
how can tehy call anything that weighs this much "mini" lol..
its amazing how quiet it is compared to my big/old powermatic . much better speed range too

i put it up on my workbench and chucked a 2x2 maple penblank in it to try her out. i was worried for a minute that the speed changes might be a PITA,but it really wasnt at all!, (though i dont see why the top pulley door isnt put in front instead of the back?that seems silly)

after roughly it round i decided to finally try out some new sanding products i bought on ebay from a seller in england..first of all this is a good seller, their prices seem good to me and also the first package the sent got lost in th mail i guess,i contacted them and they immediately rushed me another one here's their store, i bought the $35 package and man is it ever worth it!! http://stores.ebay.com/Oak-to-Ash-Woodworking
theyre also sellingpacks of 100 50mm Velcro Sanding Discs

180/240/320/400 100 of each grit supplied for like $13.

the kit includes 3 differnt type of sanders. the abranet is kinda like drywall sanding sheets, like screen-door mesh with abrasive.WOW its awesoem stuff. i'd have to say it worked better than any sandpaper ive ever used.the open mesh keeps it from clogging , the 80 grit will really do some Agressive shaping! the 400 gave an instant smooth finish,i didnt even have to go grit by grit, but i did so on the next piece ,then did 500 through 4000 with the abralon sponge pads, theyre great too!very soft and conforming.
that all took about 6 minutes maybe. then went for the EEE,then white diamond liberon wax stick..in under 10 min i went from square stock to glass finish cylinder, i didnt even try the 3 brillo-like abrasive pads.

im overjoyed with both of these purchases and looking forward to finally making some more pens(pm has a lil runout in it that showed up on the pens)

Congrats on the new lathe -- and the new sanding supplies. I'm gonna have to check those out.

Regarding the poorly placed door for swapping pulleys -- try this out with a couple small chunks of mirror:

My lathe is pretty close to the wall, with a piece of plumbing that sticks out about, oh, forehead level. So I was a little more motivated to make this fix.

    Regards,
