I've gotta learn to switch hats when I come over here. When you mentioned a record lathe this is the first thing that popped into my pointed little noggin.

I think my Dad still has a "record lathe". Back in the days before tape, syndicated radio show were shipped on transcription disks. As I recall they were about 24" in diameter... My Dad used to use it to make audio recordings of the Weddings he was photographing.. The recordings were made onto paper tape with a magnetic coating --- the capstan wheel was covered with sandpaper (honest). Somewhere on that same time line was a wire recorder. Plastic tape didn't happen much later - and then it was probably cellulose nitrate (lots of fun there). Then he do any editing that was required to dupe the paper tape audio recording onto t shellaced metal disk that could be played back on 78 rpm tape recorder.

          Paul:
If the Record lathe is still for sale "buy it". I have one and love it, they were ((are) I think they are out of production) made in Sheffield England. The same company that makes the best turning tools in the world. I also have a Wilton VS lathe that travels with me in the 5th wheel, the record stays at home on the bench. The record is cast iron close to 90 lbs. Good lathe will last a lifetime and then some. If you don't want it, email me the phone number and maybe I can work something out! I could use another for project specific setups. Thanks and good luck in your search for a lathe. Bob G.
Be the one to pickup & take home that piece of trash or to use that wood drop that was good for nothing
