    Wilton Mini Lathe

Does anyone have an opinion on the Wilton Mini Lathe? I've seen this one at Menards for around $90. Here's a brief rundown:

    8" swing
    2.3 amp variable speed motor
    all cast iron
    #1 morse taper
does not appear to have a bed extension

I'm not looking to be able to turn large bowls or table legs. I'm mainly looking to get started being able to turn ornaments, pens, small bowls-goblets-vases.

I have one that I use for pens, so far, I plan on doing some bowls and goblets and a little segmented turning. I love the lathe, I have seen it on Amazon.com for 89.95 free shipping. Good luck in your search for lathe.

The only negative I see is the #1 morse taper if you end up wanting to upgrade to a larger lathe in the future, you may have issues related to keeping your chucks and other accessories (Things you'll buy to enhance your turning capabilities.). The price is pretty attractive though, but how much are you limiting yourself?

I can't answer the second question I have there, because I opted for a HF #34706, the same size as the Jet 1236 so I would have a fairly large range of things I could do with my lathe to give myself as big a "taste" as possible. Turns out it's all the lathe I need.

Just some thoughts and playing devil's advocate here.

It looks very similar if not identical to minilathes sold by PSI and Rikon. Probably the same manufacturer. I got mine on sale at Menard's for $85 - 10% off.

So far it seems to work great. Looks to have very little runout. It is a little underpowered (0.4 hp), but for pens and goblets and small bowls this should not be a major problem.

Wilton & Jet appear to be owned by the same parent company. Whether any of the Wilton lathe is related to the Jet lathes, I don't have any idea.

A great lathe for the price, especially if you can get it on sale. Great for smaller objects.
