Next Steps (Lathe Question Part II)

So I took the plunge and got the HF 34706! $170 out the door. Now I need a book that I can use to guide me along as I start down this <s>slippery slope</s> new path. I browsed Keith Rowley's "Woodturning: A Foundation Course" and liked it. Any others you can recommend?

    Thanks in advance!

I picked up the book "Craft of Woodturning" by John Sainsbury at a garage sale. It's a little bland but it is a good reference for me. It's got a little of everything in there.

There is a chapter of the American Woodturners Association here that I'm thinking of joining. They have a library of over 400 books and videos available to club members to check out. For $30 a year it seems worth it to me. Plus they have demos and stuff at meetings. You get a discount of 10% at the local Woodcraft too. You may want to look into that if it's available to you.

I have this DVD and it is by far the best I have seen. If your a beginner or an occasional turner, you can't go wrong with this video. Also his web site has a lot of good information on it as well.

That sounds like a pretty good deal. With 10% off at Woodcraft you should get your dues back soon.

I just ordered a chuck from Oneway--spent 150% more than for my lathe.

Thank God I already have all the turning tools I'll ever need...

                          Chris,

Something else you might wanna do is look for local woodworking clubs in your area. They're likely to have classes and such. BTW, I don't know if I mentioned it, but I'd put a shelf on that lathe and put some sandbags on it to add weight and stability.

I've found a lot of Turning Books at my local library. Also have found a few videos. Also, if you have a Barnes & Noble or such in your area, you can sit in a nice chair and browse their selection. (OK - I am cheep !) I do have the Bill Grumbine Video, it is nice, but strictly for Bowl turning.
