    What to do first?

Well I have a Delta Midi Lathe with bed extension and recently bought a set of HSS turning tools at a flea market. College tuition for two kids wiped out the remainder of the tool fund for this year.

What kind of beginner project should I begin with that doesn't require more tools?

Gary, I suggest using scrap 2X2, 2X4, etc. and practice spindle turning to begin with. Turning is basically beads, coves and rounding. Get your beads and coves down, be able to turn a nice smooth cylinder, then move on to hollowing or whatever you want to learn.
