    Why Rod should take up Turning;

    Some of you may remember this piece of wet wood I prepared for drying about 4 months ago and I said I would post it when I finished it. It is Australian Blackwood Burl and was beautiful even while it was still wet. Even with sealing this piece completely with end grain sealer is still warped over a half inch.

    Well yesterday I found that it was dry enough to finish turning. This burl was very soft and the grain was very prone to tearing. I muddled through and came up with this. I decided when I first roughed it that it would be a simple shape due to the grain being so complexed. I also finished this piece with Deft High Gloss as a finish coat as the wife has plans for this bowl. The bowl is 4” tall and 7-1/4” wide.

    Inside view; The wall thickness is just under 1/4”.

    On a different note, Hey Jim! I think I am finally ready to make all those little pieces!

    This is the new saw fitted with the Jessem Mast-R-Fence and the new Incra Miter Express Sled. The wife made the comment today that if I bought any more tools without using them first I would need prostheses for my check card hand; I wonder what she was trying to tell me! [:0]

            Looks great Ken.

            How did you determine if it was ready for turning, weighing it or did you use a moisture meter?

                  That's gorgeous and I suppose the reason you entitled this "Why Rod should take up turning" is because it's Australian Blackwood Burl.

                  The real reason Rod should take up turning is that maybe just once the chips, shavings and dust will get ahead of him and the rest of us can start to feel normal again.
