    Got some new lathe chucks

I bought the nova mini chuck for my lathe a couple weeks ago at Woodcraft and this past week I bought a few accessories for it. Now I need to learn to use them. Anybody know of any good tutorials on bowl turning etc.

    Ken,

Have a look at the following links:

Simple (.pdf version also provided for downloading)

    More advanced

One of the best tutorials is "Woodturning: A Foundation Course" by Keith Rowley, which can be found in both book and video (although the video is best IMO - you might find it at your library). HTH

I have the Nova mini chuck and think it is great. I would like to add the Cole and Spigot jaws. Let me know what you think of them.

That looks like the Woodcraft collet chuck set in the background. After using it I don't know how I did without it.

Thanks for the link Ray, I bookmarked it.

Dick, I bought that Woodcraft collet set on your recommendation. It is a nice set. Thanks

I also have the Nova Midi chuck and I have picked up several sets of jaws for it including the cole jaws. They can be a little slow to set up because of the limited travel of the chuck, but if you do use them a lot that won't be a problem. What I did not like was the black bumpers left black smudges on a maple bowl that just did'nt want to come out with out sanding. Maybe I tightened them to tight I don't know but be aware, other than that they worked great.

Masking tape keeps those pesky black marks at bay.

Well Ken, that is strange on the black marks from the cole jaws. I have never had that happen to me and I use them quite often. As a mater of fact I used them on the bowl I posted in another thread. Jim’s suggestion is sound, you could wrap them in some tape but they may not hold as well. I normally tighten mine just enough to hold the piece and then I finish turning the bottom with all the pressure applied towards the headstock. I normally am afraid to go to tight since most of my pieces are rather thin walled and I am afraid of breaking the piece.

I used the cole jaws today on some light maple and they left no marks, so it probably was my fault.

I dont know anything about turning but doesnt a lathe come with this stuff? I had been thinking to start you need a lathe a set of chisels and a face shield. Or are these just upgrades and what do you gain with them?
