My wife knits, and wanted a small box for the needles she uses for the seems. Here is what I came up with:
The box has a nice tight suction fit. I did not have small enough jaws for my chuck, so I used a bottle stopper mandrel to turn this. Not the best solution as I got a lot of vibration when turning at the unsupported end, but once it was round I could use my fingers to support it.
I drilled out the top with a 5/8" forstner bit, and the bottom with a 1/2" spiral bit. To finish the bottom I turned a small tenon that the bottom part could be pressed on. Sanded the maple to 600 grid, then applied some tung oil and sanded again with 600 grid. Then a couple of applications of EEE-Ultra Shine to buff. I liked the resulting finish, so I opted against friction polish and just applied a little bit of bees wax and buffed it.
