    Mystery wood box

My father in law gave me a branch of some shrub, he thinks it is 'Shrub Ash' but I am not sure about that. I took a section and used it to try out the threaded rings Lee Valley sells. I hoped those rings might be a great alternative to having a Klein jig. But the quality of the rings isn't great (some sharp corners, clearly visible traces of the casting, rings forced together with crossed threads during shipment), and even the largest available diameter (1-5/8") is pretty limiting.

    Anyhow here it is:

    I made a few mistakes:

    - When gluing the rings in I did not line up the grain

    - The inside transition to the rings is not pretty, but I did not want to sand afterwards in fear of damaging the finish on the rings

But the wood is pretty striking, and I like that little box. And now that I know what to look out for the next one hopefully comes out less flawed!

    Gerd

PS: Just in case someone is curious: The 'Gold-Plated Box Rings' can be found here:

nice, I think everytime I make something I learn that I could have done it a little better. Just keep trying. You will be the only one who notices the mistakes.
