My father in law really like the kaleidoscope I made for him last Christmas and requested a few more for his friends. They are basically just the small kaleidoscope sets as sold at several places, I got some from Lee valley and this last batch from Craft Supplies:

They are quite easy to turn. What makes them different is that I used spalted maple from a tree that had to be removed from my FIL's front yard. Also instead of the colored plastic thingies that come with the sets, I used small rocks my FIL polished in the kaleidoscopes. Here they are:


The 2 slightly lighter colored had a thin coat of tung oil followed by a superglue-based finish, the others have several coats of tung oil, followed by several coats of wipe-on oil/urethane product.
Without special optics it is hard to capture what they look like inside, but I tried and this gives a rough idea:

These are as fun to make as pens!
