The other day while driving on a chore I noticed a branch of wood on the side of the road, seemed like it had fallen of the truck of a tree trimmer. I caught a glimpse of the cross section, and thought 'Hm, that might be cherry' (mostly wishful thinking, I had never worked with cherry and really wanted to). So on my way back I picked it up (probably did someone a favor as it was in a slightly dangerous location).
At home I noticed a small shoot that still had some leaves, so I used those to identify the wood (there are some great sites out there for that, eg http://www.oplin.org/tree/index.html or http://www.extension.umn.edu/distrib...es/DD6593.html). It turned out to be black cherry, about a good 4" in diameter and about 5' long.
I went on to cut of a section to spin it on the lathe, and the most wonderful aroma filled my shop. It smells similar to the fruit, a sweet and rich scent, very pleasant!
My first result was this beaker:

Lightly sanded to 600 grid, and finished with a quick coat of walnut oil, which I also never tried before. Lot's of the wood is left, looking forward to it!
