    Unlimited Pickup Garbage Day Score

Tomorrow is one of two unlimited pickup trash days we get a year. So, I'm driving home tonight and I came from the opposite direction that I normally do--just so I could park in the street and not interrupt the neighborhood basketball game in our drive. I passed one of my neighbors' house that I normally don't and noticed an old 3 wheel band saw sitting out in the trash. I couldn't drive fast enough away from one of those mongrels, but stopped when I noticed an older disc sander next to it. I grabbed that and threw the dirty nasty thing into the backseat of my Accord (ugh, gotta clean that mess now...). I happened to check the cabinet under the BS and there were tons of sanding discs, sanding sleeves, BS blades, 8" saw blades, etc. I grabbed all of those thinking the BS blades would fit my 10" but they won't. I feel bad about not leaving them with the BS.

This is an old Homecraft 8" belt driven disc sander. Came home, it fired right up. There is some vibration, but I'm thinking the belt has a flat spot from sitting so long. It's on a home made base/cabinet. I'll have to replace the belt and put a new disc on it, but it should work very nicely.

Timing was everything. This thing could not have been on the curb for more than 30 seconds. We have pickup after pickup circling the neighborhood and one was patiently waiting for me to get done doing my digging. I have no problem at all with people driving around taking the stuff. Keeps it all out of landfills and probably gets used or recycled. I have to wonder, though, is the price of scrap really worth it if you are burning all that gas to get it?

Nice find Joe. Looks like you can get 8in PSA sanding discs all day long. Do any of the extra discs you picked up still have good adhesive?

Don't know. It was late when I got it. I'll check them out tomorrow.

Reminds me of Japan. Many "gaijins" went "gomi" hunting on special trash days in the '80s and 90's. Practically new skis, very good TVs, some tools, almost new household items etc. From about 2000 on, electronics large items required the calling of a special number and incurred a special cost.

        Congratulations on the find!

Picked up a few goodies on those type days on my mail route. Gonna miss that opportunity. More important, I had a couple of customers that would let me drop stuff in front of their houses a day or 2 before the scheduled pick up. Now I will have to pay to make a run to the dump.

Nice. Gotta love those curb side finds.

Nice find, I have picked up some old cabinets in a similar situation that are now part of the base of my miter saw bench. It never ceases to amaze me how quick stuff goes when you put it out for bulk trash pickup.
