Tomorrow is one of two unlimited pickup trash days we get a year. So, I'm driving home tonight and I came from the opposite direction that I normally do--just so I could park in the street and not interrupt the neighborhood basketball game in our drive. I passed one of my neighbors' house that I normally don't and noticed an old 3 wheel band saw sitting out in the trash. I couldn't drive fast enough away from one of those mongrels, but stopped when I noticed an older disc sander next to it. I grabbed that and threw the dirty nasty thing into the backseat of my Accord (ugh, gotta clean that mess now...). I happened to check the cabinet under the BS and there were tons of sanding discs, sanding sleeves, BS blades, 8" saw blades, etc. I grabbed all of those thinking the BS blades would fit my 10" but they won't. I feel bad about not leaving them with the BS.
This is an old Homecraft 8" belt driven disc sander. Came home, it fired right up. There is some vibration, but I'm thinking the belt has a flat spot from sitting so long. It's on a home made base/cabinet. I'll have to replace the belt and put a new disc on it, but it should work very nicely.
Timing was everything. This thing could not have been on the curb for more than 30 seconds. We have pickup after pickup circling the neighborhood and one was patiently waiting for me to get done doing my digging. I have no problem at all with people driving around taking the stuff. Keeps it all out of landfills and probably gets used or recycled. I have to wonder, though, is the price of scrap really worth it if you are burning all that gas to get it?
