Was doing a lot of thicknessing today and my planer was not feeding the stock very well... I was having to push/pull it through with fairly large force. I thought the rollers were screwed up, but it finally dawned on me that maybe the blades were dull. The surface texture was still nice and smooth though, so I wasn't sure. I finally took off the guard and sure enough, there was a noticeable dull edge on the blades, although they still 'felt' sharp.
They were reversible, so I flipped them over (first time I've ever done that). Wow, what a difference - planer is about half as loud and feeds stock nice again (I also cleaned the rollers with mineral spirits at the same time).
So I'm curious - how often do you sharpen/change your blades? And do you tend to sharpen, or replace?
