Ryobi Drill press spindle lock is stuck

I have the 12" Ryobi tabletop drill press, and the spindle lock is stuck. I had lowered the spindle and locked it in place to be sure the drill bit was "aimed" right. Now I can not get the spindle lock to disengage. It has a lever on it with gear teeth that fit over another set of plastic gear teeth. These are all fine. I am not sure how to fix this.
