    I'm back, again.

    So, I'm back on the forum, again. After moving from place to place in the military, we've finally retired from the Army and settled down in Olathe, KS. I now get to set up my shop and keep it that way, at least until I decide to change something.

    That all being said, I'd better mention something about tools so I don't get in trouble for posting this in the wrong place.

    I've been looking for a decent hand held belt sander, and being a fan of Ryobi, I thought I would look into the BE318. Most of the reviews I found aren't very good, but you can never be sure of what kind of user posted the review. Has anyone here tried it out? Should I take the plunge, or pass?

          I believe I have that model.... bought it from the pawn shop on the cheap. I wouldn't recommend it, the belt tracking is not good and the motor bogs down. YMMV though since mine was used.

              I have a Ryobi, not sure what model. I would not recommend it. YMMV

                  I've never used any Ryobi belt sander, but i can't imagine anything worse than my late 1980's craftsman 3 x 21. It's on the list of stuff to replace (the list is getting shorter) but i've used it so little that i forget.

                      I've had several brands and swear by Porter Cable 3"x24" (#361). It's a bit lighter than the 4"x24" (#362), and I use both. I wouldn't buy any other brand.

                          I have the PC352VS. Solid built, metal body, 3x21. Enough weight to work effortlessly on horiziontal surfaces, yet light enough to work on verticle sections without strain to the arms and shoulders. Extremely well balanced. Far and away the best belt sander I have ever used.

                              I have a Ryobi 3x21 I think the model is BE321VS and I like it. But I use it very little. My Milwaukee 5 inch radum orbit sander sands almost as fast. It is the 6021VS and Home Depot sells it for about $60. If you don't already have a good ROS, I would get one first. You may decide you do not need the belt sander.

                              I used to live in Olathe. My late wife and I purchased our first house there and we have family nearby. It's a nice part of the country.
