There are several Earlex HVLP units. There is a review of at least one of them at the Wood Whisperer website (may not be spelled right). He was fairly positive about it.
I'm not sure why car guys use conventional spray outfits. One reason may be the fact that they typically have large compressors already so air supply is not an issue. I believe air quality regulations are forcing professional shops towards HVLP. Car finishes are starting to go water borne but for clear I think the only option is solvent based and to match existing finishes will require solvent based paint too. I've used conventional spray gear too and even HF guns will shot a pretty good finish. But you need a lot of air and the pressure you are using tends to lead to the finish bouncing off the object being painted. With correctly adjusted HVLP you do not have hardly any bounce off. Shooting past the object is possible regardless.
