    12in Jointer ?

    All,

I am contemplating a monster jointer that is on sale. The owner does not know the brand, but he said that the top is 13.5'' x 62" That makes me think it's a 12 incher. But the motor, he said, is only 1.5 HP. Is this usual? Is $400 a good deal regardless?

Hoping to hear from you all.

    Regards,
    Thi Nguyen

5' and only 1.5 HP doesn't sound like many 12" Jointers I've seen. Most 12" wide jointers look like aircraft carriers. $400 sounds like a good deal on a large jointer though.

I'd want to check it out firsthand, especially if it is old iron. Check the motor, make sure it isn't 3 phase, and the bearings are good (as well as the cutterhead bearings). Flat and parallel tables, fence operation, etc.

+1. A 12" jointer fairly current, would likely be 2HP or larger, and the beds O/A would be around 7' or more. Of course it could be a short bed low HP jointer.

More than likely a Jointer/Planer combo machine like Rikon and Jet make I'd bet

He may not be measuring the table surface. If you include the fence adjustment mechanism on my 8" Rockwell, 13.5" would be pretty close.
