    Shopsmith

A friend of my friend has moved a few states away and could not take all of his tools with him. It sounds like the guy had a bit of redundancy in his power tools. This guy gave my friend a Shopsmith in working condition with no expectation of him giving it back. My friend calls me up and says he has no room for it, nor does he have any plans of really using it, so would I like to have it for the price of "just come and get it, I want my shed back".

It sounds like it is a Mark V Shopsmith, don't know which particular model number, and sounds like it has all the standard accessories/attachment and has a bandsaw add on, plus I am getting two boxes of tools, one being 16 lathe tools. I will be able to check it out before picking it up, though I do know the friend who originally owned it, and know that he does take good care of his tools. All I really know about the Shopsmith is that it is a multiple shop tool in one, and I just know that it is called "Shopsmith".

Anybody have any input on the Shopsmith itself? Anyone here have one or used one? Thoughts on it, or "Don't worry about it, you're getting a shopsmith for the cost of gas to your friend's house and back and his gratitude of having his shed back"?

I have had one for years. I keep it at my vacation house to use when I am there. It takes up little space. It is a solid piece of machinery. If you don't mind the setup for the differene functions, you can make some decent projects with it. A new one would cost about $ 3500 - 4500. I think it is worth the "price" you are paying.

+1. If you have the room, it's a great deal. I never had one, but have used one. It performs all the functions well, the table saw table could be larger.

I have a 15'x9' shop. I have a Ryobi 12" benchtop drill press that I like, so I don't think this will replace that. My current tablesaw is the $200 model Ryobi tablesaw at Home Depot. I am hoping this ShopSmith saw will be better. I do not have a bandsaw nor a lathe, and would love to have both.

I do believe that if this all works out I will have expended all of my good karma for the rest of my life.

Here are some pictures that my friend just sent. First is the bandsaw, and it looks like the table needs some rust removal.

I am guessing this is the table saw portion.

        Sanding disk/lathe end I believe.

Keep in mind I don't own a ShopSmith, nor do I play one on TV. I understand that it's a very good lathe, and the the table saw table tilts, not the blade. Definitely pick it up—with a little elbow grease you'll have a nice shop addition.

Go for it if you have the room. If nothing else use it for the lathe, disc sander in the bottom pic, and a horizontal boring machine.

Not counting my chickens before that hatch, but I have started trying to figure out where to put the Shopsmith, and my friend did say that it has wheels. Oh, and apparently there is a bit more to the price. My friend said that when I get more experience in woodworking, he wants a cabinet style humidor. I figure that will be a fair trade.

                Take the shopsmith.

Photos are of an older machine (60s).

I have a unit from 1958. Its main use with me is drill press.

I occasionally set it up as my dado saw (I have a wobbler that fits on the SS much better than BT3000).

Recently picked up a live center tailstock for the lathe - but haven't used it, yet.

Will he include the CZ rifle that's shown in the photo?

The CZ rifle is NOT part of the deal. Not an issue though, as I have more rifles than he does.

Rifles are like clamps—You can't have too many.

It looks like I am going to be checking it out and picking it up this Saturday.
