    Dewalt sawstop alternative?

It's an interesting device to say the least. Having the zctp slapping your hand away? I guess we'll see.

Looks like some positive news for woodworkers! Any competition to the saw stop will help not only further safety on t.s's but eventually decrease the price of the various technologies.

It's an interesting idea. I wonder how well it would work with subject material that would have considerable weight.

The device's action would have to be fairly powerful. How hard would the impact to the hand be when cutting lighter material? Enough to cause bruising or maybe break a finger?

That's food for thought. Other thoughts are working with a guard, and a riving knife. I'm also thinking if you are using a miter gauge with an extended fence, and the plate flies up, it may not carry the miter gauge straight up, but at an angle, making it get caught in the slot.

The company I work for which is in the nuclear power business has many patents. We also have to "work around" other companies patents. I've had to talk to our counsels and outside counsels several times over the years. My impression after these discussions is that patents are one of the less difinitive areas of law. A small company (SawStop?) could have decent patents that they are unable to enforce because a larger company decides they would rather spend money in court than paying for a royalty. At the price the inventor currently wants, wasting money on lawyers seems like a valid alternative. A court could require the larger company to buy a royalty but they could also throw out the patent or require the smaller company to reduce it's fees.

Of course, true to form, I already purchased a Steel City granite top saw.

Always a day late and a dollar short.
