    Steel Rules

For awhile now I have been wanting a 6" steel rule. I have been using a tape measure, and hate it every time. I went to Woodcraft tonight looking to buy the simple 6" rule for $4.00. I got there and ended up getting the Woodcraft branded one for $12.50--3x what I thought I would spend. I did it knowing I would use it on almost everything I do.

Anyway, that got me to thinking...is this one really that much more accurate? Mainly I got it for the 32nd's and 64th's graduations on each side and the graduations on the end. It's not a Starrett, but honestly, I don't know what the difference between this and a Starrett would be.

So, what does everyone use for measuring?

The first link has a 6 inch at a decent price. I have several of the 12" rules from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th links and use them regularly! Almost daily. I have several as I keep at least one in the house at all times; one in a tool box that I carry around for "fixing" things; and two in the shop.
The only problem in ordering one 6 inch rule is that shipping will cost as much or more than the rule.

These type of rules are very accurate, at least the ones I have from LeeValley. I rely on them for their accuracy.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you wanted!

I have 2 Starrett 6" rules, one for measuring and one in a shop made depth gauge. My 12" and 24" I think are the Woodcraft brand that I bought on sale several years ago.

I had/have a 6" ruler the was a freebie several years ago when the Woodsmith store moved. I used it all the time. It fit into small spaces I couldn't get a tape measure into. It was indispensible when I replaced the kitchen cabinets. Unfortunately, I either lost it or misplaced it in the house/garage.
