    Lucky Garage Sale Pickups

I was browsing Craigslist and happened to stumble on a local garage sale offering a Jet table saw and the HF shaper. Turns out I ended up getting a way better saw on Ebay, but that's another thread.

I did find some very cool items at the garage sale though. The Sears bandsaw was $100. Wasn't in the market for one, but seemed like a great deal. Now I can make the drunken cutting boards I've been drooling over at Lumberjocks.

Does anybody have any advice on getting the bandsaw all cleaned up and running smoothly? I've never touched one of these before and figure I will put a new blade on it for sure, but otherwise I think it's just a little elbow grease getting the cobwebs and dust off.

The shaper was only $75 and I figured again if nothing else I was getting a 1hp motor and a great cast iron top.

There were 4 or 5 shaper cutters in the green ammo box in the next picture. I don't really plan on using hand tools much, but the steel miter box just seemed like an awesome thing to buy for a couple bucks. The machinist vista needs a forklift to be moved and just has a lot of dust on it. I am hoping to somehow integrate that into my HF drill press. Finally I also got a Sears dovetail template and that incredibly cool old fashioned hand powered miter saw system ...

I had never seen anything like it and just had to add that to my collection.

The XY cross drill press vise is handy and looks like one Harbor Freight sells. With the bandsaw you'll want to check out Mark Duginski bandsaw books, he's got a lot to say on the subject. The miter box has possibilities but you'll probably need to sharpen the blade. Good day at the sale!

I have that saw and it's been very good to me since I found a new drive pulley for it.
The owners manual is available from Sears to download free.

My saw gets used for a lot of resawing, everything from Osage Orange to Oak, Hickory, Pecan, Walnut and Cedar.

If the tires are original make sure they don't have a flat spot or you'll have a helluva vibration and the saw will walk across the floor.

Make sure the pulleys are tight on the drive and driven shafts. They are made of unobtanium. The previous owner of mine let the driven pulley get loose and wallow out the hole and the keyway. It took me a year to find a replacement.

        Order an extra belt.

Don't over tighten the belt or you'll find out why I told you to order an extra.

        Good Score!

A lucky day at the sale. You got some good deals. For the bandsaw, just use a good sharp blade with a TPI suitable for the stock being cut. Adjust your height guide just above the stock. The guide bearings should be just skimming the blade behind the teeth, and the thrust bearing should be making contact. If you have the manual, or can download one, adjust blade tension as prescribed.

The shaper is a good deal for a light duty machine. I think it's limited to a 1/2" spindle. It will do some nice work, but larger routers will perform better.

I had that bandsaw while I was in Japan and had to leave it there. Sold it to a friend for almost nothing. I really liked that saw because of the large table. It was very handy but I am finding my new Grizzly does have more power. I don't think I missed it not having more power but once or twice in the 20 years that I had it.

Besides the big table, I liked the "tilt" head. The tilt head BS is sometimes referred to as "ship keel" BS or something like that. There was a thread a good while ago on this forum about that model.
