    Stanley No 81 scrapper found

In going through some of my dad's old tools, I found a Stanley No 81 scraper with a rosewood sole. It has been used but taken care of. It is also rusty but appears to be surface only.

It may have been my dad's, but he must have gotten it from someone else. It could have been an uncle's as my dad did not do fine woodworking such as cabinets, furniture or tables. He left that to his brothers.

Ebay has a value on the of $20 - $80. I would place this one in the $35 - $50 range.

I haven't joined in on the plane collection that some of you have but this is a start!

Congratulations, Hank, on a great find. Welcome to the fun (and sometimes expensive) world of plane collecting.

It's an unusual start, but a start nonetheless!

Learning to use planes and scrapers has stepped my game up a notch. I still have only about four or five useful planes, but I have a bunch of wooden ones I got at a garage sale. They're not in fighting trim yet, but I drag them out once in a while and fuss with them.

My low-angle block plane gets used the most. I have a Stanley 3-1/2 (or 3 or 4, I'm not sure) that can make the really fine transucent shavings they talk about. I've used it on the interior trays of my most recent boxes to give them a "piston fit".

      Have fun, Hank!

Run, Run as fast as you can.

There is no known cure for this malady, escape while you may still have a chance to be normal.

I started out 20 years ago when I bought an old REAL Buck Brothers block plane at a yard sale for 50¢.
After leting it sit for two decades, I'm now bringing it back to life... along with a bunch of other yard sale finds from the past.

Finding a plane or scraper with a family history is a good start. My first was my dad's #5.

Dal, the Scioto's are good finds. Scioto was basically a second line of planes marketed by the Ohio plane Company. The last Scioto planes were made in 1907. I have a few of them, and they are the only wooden planes I look for now.

Yeah, I love these Scioto planes. I always have my eyes open for another one.
I hope to bring at least one of them back to usefulness one day when I have time and materials.
