    Jet bandsaw serial numbers

    Hi Folks,
This is my first post in a long time (long story) but I lurk a lot. I picked up an older Jet band saw off CL and would like to determine its age. I'm assuming from the color (blue-green?) it's fairly old. It was made in Taiwan. It's a JWBS-140S, serial no. 7036990. Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate on it's age or how to tell from the s/n?
    TIA,
    Jim

I have an old blue Jet 14" bandsaw, model JWBS-14CS (CS=closed stand, 1 hp motor; OS=open stand, 3/4 hp motor) serial 61215268. I bought it used, but got a manual with it which has a manual version date of 4/96. And the motor has a label with the date 12/1996.

My s/n isn't close to yours, and the CS and OS models may not use the same number series, so that's no help. But your manual (if you got one) or your motor may carry dates.

      Thanks, Sid

I appreciate the response. The motor on mine is stamped 1997, so, if we can infer from the serial no's, the first 3 digits are yr & mo. and maybe the rest are the actual sequence in the production no's (yours would be 15,268th one that year, mine 6990th, sounds plausible). Anyway, looks like mine was made in 1997, probably not worth what I paid but it operates well. I think it needs new bands on the wheels; these can be moved side-to-side within their tracks and are developing some cracks.

you could contact jet CS, but it's doubtful they'd be of much help. i have a JWBS-18 that's ~ 10 years old. i say approximately because jet couldn't confirm it's age based on any of the numbers on the saw or its motor. they really are just so terribly below average in all respects except courtesy. but, my saw only cost me $40 (not a typo). can't imagine how buyers paying retail for it would have felt.
there's a solution to every problem.......you just have to be willing to find it.
