    Replacement Plane Parts

I'm finally getting around to making replacements totes for a couple of planes. I have a Sargent and a Millers Falls 814 with badly damaged tote screws. One of them is bent.

In some cases, I suppose I could use threaded rod, but I'm wondering if there's a place that sells screws with 1/2" diameter heads, 7/32 diameter shank, 4" length and appropriate thread pitch. I've searched for plane handle screws and come up dry. None of the usual sources seem to carry parts for these planes.

Highland Hardware sells some plane parts, but I don't know if they have what you need. Have you checked Ebay for old planes for parts?

You might try something like this, they seem to have almost any type of fastener you could want.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to try long #12 screws if I can find them locally. The best choice seems to be #12 screws with fillister heads, but they're hard to come by and I only need a few of each rather than thousand piece lots.

Broken tote = bent screw. These tools were badly abused at some point.

Of course, making new totes requires buying some new tools. In this case, wood rasps. Probably would have been cheaper to by new totes, but then again most of my planes are not made by Stanley.
