I was looking for a new respirator as my old one was wearing out. The straps were becoming frayed and the elasticity was almost non existent which made getting a snug fit near impossible. I also just started turning and wanted to get something that would protect my entire face. I can use a face shield but then I don't get as much dust protection. If I use my respirator I don't have as much face protection.
So I compromised ended up getting a full face respirator. A guy on CL was selling them new and threw in an extra set of filters. It's the 3M 6800 model and comes with the popular 3M PINK filters. It works really well and gives a very snug but comfortable fit. It doesn't give as much protection as a face shield however. The exhaust is positioned so it doesn't cause any fogging (at least none I've experienced). The straps are a rubber type instead of the cloth (elastic) type my AO Safety had so I don't think this will wear out or loose it's elasticity. Having both eye and breathing protection is convenient because I usually misplace my goggles. I bought it primarily for turning but I think it will be my primary respirator.
Only downside so far is the weird looks people give you when they pass by. I work with my garage door open which faces the street. Well that and it is a bit heavier than a regular respirator. I'll see if the slight extra weight bothers me. If it does I may get a 3M 7503.
