    Collet adapter

Quite a while back I bought a 3 piece Ryobi 2 HP, 1/2" collet router kit and I thought I got an adapter with it that allowed me to use the 1/4" router bits and I can't find the adapter. Did I get an adapter with this kit or did I just dream I did? If it was only a dream does anyone out there know if such an adapter is actually made? A salesman at my H.D. store told me he didn't know about any adapter but said most newer routers come with both size collets..

What you need is a ½" to ¼" reducing sleeve (sometimes called a collet reducer), a very common and easy-to-obtain part. However, make sure that you get a good-quality one, such as this.

New routers with 1/2" capacity usually include inserts for 1/4". Check your parts list to see if one is supposed to be included. Maybe it was never packed, or fell on the floor when you opened the box. The reducer Ray linked should work for you.

Although I don't have the same router as you, I can tell you that all the 1/2" routers I have came with 1/4" collet adapters...

I use the motor off an old Ryobi R-500 plunge router in my router table. It came with a 1/2 collet and an adapter. On the rare occasions I use a 1/4 shank bit in the table I use the adapter and it works OK.

My newer PC routers have 1/4 collets in addition to 1/2 collets.

            collett adapter

A big thank you to those that answered my post about my missing collett adapter, after a very long search I found mine buried where only a 70 year old would put it, in the bottom of a box of leftover parts from my router kit, didn't realize what it was at the time I unpacked it I guess....Thanks again guys!!
