    Band Saw Tuning

I started working on my brother's bandsaw. Hand turning the wheels the blade seemed to track reasonably well. Turning it on and watching the blade at the table it wasn't wandering. The wheels were coplanar, at least according to the straight edge I laid across them. It doesn't have a fence but I did try some curved test cuts. Initially I had problems with twisting but that was a combination of user error, tension not high enough and the guide blocks being set too wide. Tomorrow I will try some test cuts with a fence and miter gauge to see if the blade wants to wander. Is there anything else to check?

Check the guide block faces (blade sides) that they are smooth. The front edges should be set just behind the teeth. They should be easily adjustable and hold a fix when adjusted laterally, and spaced to skim the blade.

The guide assembly should be easily adjusted up and down and hold a fix in line with the blade. The upper and lower rollers should be free wheeling and be easily adjusted to guide on the back edge of the blade.

The table should be able to be moved and adjusted at 90 degrees to the blade. The belt should be in good condition with no frays.

My newest acquisition is a Rockwell 14". No serial # tag: but I am sure it is a series 28-?. What do I with limited funds and an upper guide bracket that is broken and has no guide bracket. Where can I get a used assy. or specs. to build my own. HELP! Phil

As important as all those other things are, nothing is more critical than using a high quality blade. If you're unsure of the quality of the blade that is on the saw, replace it with one of the type you would put on your own saw.

Have you used Morse BS blades? Phil

If I'm not mistaken and Morse is the house brand at Menards, I bought one Morse blade a long time ago when I needed a blade in a hurry. I wasn't overly impressed with them and even in a pinch I don't think I would buy another. All in all though, IMO, most big box band saw blades would fall into this category. Definitely a case of you get what you pay for.

Thanks Dave, I guess I will bite the bullet and buy a better quality blade. Phil But what about my guide assy.??????

If you are going to be resawing with it, install a resaw blade and verify the table is at 90 degrees to the blade. Extend the guide to full height and do a test cut to see if you get square and true pieces. If you have problems it could mean a weak tension spring. If you don't have an Iturra catalog, get one. It's a great resource for band saws (and some history of other machines). He still does not have a web site but is very reachable by phone. It would also help to know the make and model.

"Extend the guide to full height and do a test cut to see if you get square and true pieces" , You never want your guide to extend over the piece to be cut by more than 1/4 to 1/2 in. this will disable what the guide is there for by allowing blade flex during the cut. Do not follow those instructions as they are incorrect IMO. Like Dave said get the best blade you can afford, tune your saw properly and in sequence(thats important) and go slow as most folks try to cut way too fast when resawing which cause,s the blade to drift. Keep your machine clean and lubed as well. Take good care of your equipment and it will do the same for you.

Guess I should have said "and perform the test cut on a piece of wood that will just clear the bottom of the guide". I've owned a 14" Delta for 25 years and I just assumed Dave would use a scrap of appropriate width. Of course the guide should always be adjusted to just over the surface of the wood being cut. IMHO, 1/2" is too much but whatever...

My point was you want to test and adjust the machine at it's maximum resaw depth if you plan to do any resaw work.

I should add that an appropriate resaw blade is also a requirement...1/2" width minimum. Anything else does not have enough beam strength to cut true. The one from Iturra is excellent.

Thanks for the advice Rich and Tom. But what should I do about my broken upper guide bracket? Phil

Phil, you might get some more info if you start your own thread with a proper subject rather than using this one, which Dave started to ask about adjustments, not about repair parts. You could also try posting a WTB in member classifieds. You'll need to be specific about which parts you need. If you need a manual, there are tons over at owwm.com in Publication Reprints under Machine Info and you can get part numbers from there. There is also a fairly active buy/sell forum at owwm.org (called BOYD). Folks are parting out stuff all the time on that forum.
