jointer gib question

I have a taiwan-generic 8" jointer (looks like an old HF) (I got it REAL cheap). Put in new blades from Holbren. Setting knives was PITA. I think it may have been harder than it needs to be. The gibs are a little concave, and they also have a very light grid pattern on them to grip the blade. It seems to me that, like the frog on a hand plane, I could improve the gibs by filing them dead-flat. But i don't want to mess them up if the curve is there for a reason, likewise the grid pattern.

I don't need advise on how to set the knives; I've read all the techniques and seen all the videos. I just need to know if anyone has any knowledge or opinion regarding flattening the gibs vs leaving them alone...

I've never changed the faces. The surface is usually that way to hold the knife better. If it isn't, and it moves, or it is too difficult to keep them from moving when setting them, you might consider a different set of gibs. Filing flat could be a problem.

Is it possible to replace the gibs? After reading your suggestion, I just did a google search, amazon search, and ebay search, and came up empty. (8" gib") You mentioned a different set of gibs. Any idea where they would come from?

They may be similar to other 8" machines, like Jet or Delta.

Cabinetman got ya covered on the grid.... leave the curve alone as I do believe you have a copy-cat of an old Delta with curved gibs. The curve was designed to act as chip-breaker if memory serves me correct. So.. if it ain't broke don't fix it would be my approach.
