Franklin 1 1/2 HP motor for Bandsaw upgrade?

    Franklin 1 1/2 HP motor for Bandsaw upgrade?

    The riser block thread reminded me: a couple years back I picked up a 1725 RPM, 1 1/2 HP Franklin motor off of CL for next to nothing. I googled Franklin recently, it appears they make motors for submersible well pumps, though I don't know the model.

    Could one of you electrical experts advise whether this would be suitable as a bandsaw motor?

      If the motor is indeed for a submersible well pump, then it is water-cooled (the action of the pump end of the motor/pump assembly pulls cool water past the motor). These motors will quickly overheat and burn out if not submerged, so it would not make a suitable motor for a bandsaw.

      There will be no motor plate on this motor if it's for a well pump. Plates for those motors are typically located on the above-ground control box.

          UC is correct about submersible pumps. they are the same as refrigeration compressors. The physical mass of the motor windings are very small for the power these motors deliver and without the high density cooling rate of the refrigerant or in the submersable pumps the water they would burn up in about an hour.
