HSS vs High Carbon Tools Ques.

I'm just getting started in turning and a friend has offered me some very good prices on some good turning tools but they are not HSS. Should I hold out for the HSS or go with the high carbon steel at about 20% of retail. I have plenty of time and don't mind sharpening.

My personal preference would be for the HSS. You're going to find them more durable and hold an edge longer (although the CS would probably take a finer edge).

At 20% of retail and lots of time to sharpen, you could buy 4 sets, still only pay 80% of retail and have lots of sharp tools at your disposal!
      Thanks:

Thanks guys. Looks like I got a 50-50 split. That's what makes America great. :-)
