Should I upgrade my table saw?

I have a chance to pick up a Craftsman zipcode saw for ~$400, brand new and still in the box. Right now I have my BT3000 that I am for the most part happy with but I would really like the cast iron, more power and being able to use standard accessories. I am not sure I would want to give up the compact footprint and easy mobility though. How well do the mobile bases work on these? How is the fit and finish? I REALLY want it, but I have a small shop.

I am tempted to pick it up and store it away until we can move, that's for sure! Or buy it and pop it on craigslist for some quick cash!

I had a 22124 for 3-1/2 years and loved it. The fit and finish good to very good, not stellar, but most other aspects were great...loved the Beise fence. With good alignment and blade choice, it cuts impressively. I don't know that you'll gain much if any accuracy, but it is a lot quieter, has a smoother larger table surface, likely more power, a ton more stability (ok, 1/5 ton more ), and was really a pleasure to use. Even though I now have an excellent Shop Fox 3hp cabinet saw that's really in a different league, there are still things about the 22124 that I miss....like the 44" cast iron surface. Mine was on a Craftsman mobile base that worked quite well, though I didn't move it too often.

Which model? That may or may not be a good price, as the lower end one was discontinued, for a lot less money, and had a cheaper fence (some would argue, needed an upgrade).

I would go down and look at the demo model of the Ridgid 4511. While not cast iron on top (granite), it does have a mobile base under it (gives you an idea).

It is the 22124 which I believe is the preferred one.

It sold, yesterday. Right after I found out about it. It was a closeout at a Sears store. I called this morning to buy it over the phone and pick it up this week and it was already gone. I did find out that it did not have a fence but for that price I would not have worried about it I don't think.

So, did you have the money for it in Cash? (not going to charge it)

If so, just stash that in a fund, and keep your eye out. You will be in a better posistion in the future.

I don't charge anything. Ever. It is against my morals to do so. If I can't pay cash, I can't afford it. I also usually keep a fair amount of cash in hand because I have had a lot of luck coming across deals on used stuff, but if you don't have the cash someone else will beat you to it.

To me there is no difference between paying cash and paying with a card, then paying it off every month.

That is the truth. In many purchasing situations, especially for used stuff, as they say: "Cash talks, BS walks". Besides you can't spend more than what you have.
