    HF HVLP Compressor CFM Requirements

I have a 20 year old lightly used Craftsman 3HP 20 gal compressor. The specs say (SCFM@PSI) 8.8@40, 7.7@90 and 7.3@100. Would this be close enough to drive either of these two HF units in non-production usage?

    Model 66222

    Model 94572

The specs on the 66222 say 12CFM@45 and on the 94572 the larger unit is 9@35 and the smaller one is 5@30. These are from the manual, not the web description.

My immediate need is spraying Rustoleum on the cabinet and parts on a Powermatic 66 refurbish project. These two units are on sale ($40 and $50) and there is the 20% coupon good for this weekend, so it might be worth a try if there is a chance it will run.

I'm leaning towards the two unit product since it has three different needle sizes between the two guns. I do have conventional guns which I've used ok with latex, so these would not necessarily be called on for that application.

My setup is much the same, perhaps even the identical compressor, and I use the HF 66222 spray gun. I have had no problem with it, however I have yet to try and paint a house or car with the setup. There may not be enough air for extended usage but for what it sounds like your going to do and how I use it, it's a nice match.

Bill, Braunschweiger and onion sandwitch for lunch, good thing I'm not working with anyone today.

Thanks Bill...I'm going to give it a shot. Haven't been to HF in a few weeks so I'm starting to twitch a bit!

You betcha on the coupon! In addition, I took a print of the web price for a pressure regulator. Store price was $9.99 and web was $4.99...got the lower price as usual. Went with the 2-gun kit which is normally $59.99, on sale for $49.99, out the door for $39.99 (not sure why 25% off of sale but I didn't ask.) Together with the $5 on the regulator I feel pretty good. I practically always take a print of web prices since one time when I didn't and paid 40% more in the store.

Wanted to report I finally got around to spraying Rustoleum Pro Primer on the cabinet of my "new" PM 66 and the Craftsman kept up just fine. I did use a 3/8 hose and cranked the compressor all the way up on pressure. I picked up the small HF regulator to attach to the gun and stepped down the pressure there to 30 psi. I did find a viscosity cup (DIN 4 I think) and after measuring the primer found it to be way to thick. Thinned it down by about 10% and used the 1.8 MM tip in the larger gun. It could have probably been thinned a bit more but it was fine for primer. Next step is the Rustoleum hammered.
