I want to add a sweep to our front door to seal it a little tighter but need to cut the bottom a little higher to do that. The door is solid wood and very heavy. I'd like to not have to take it off to do it. Will the HF multitool cut through stock that is 1 3/4" thick?

It probably won't. The main part of the horizontal cutting blade is exactly 1 3/4" long. But, between vibration and the resistance of cutting stock that thick, I don't think you'd be able to cut all the way through. If you were to cut from both sides, then it wouldn't be a problem, but making the cuts meet in the middle would be tough.
I think taking down the door and using a circular saw would be more effective. -
No... see... what I wanted was an excuse to buy one.
Now what I could do is buy one, cut as deep as it will go then finish with my handsaw.

Aha. Well, the blade is exactly 1 3/4" long, so it's the perfect tool for trimming the door! You'd be stupid not to go buy that tool (especially with the 20% off coupon). Go buy it. You want it. You need it.

I don't know about the HF tool, but I bought the Dremel version of it this summer. Works fine, but it gets hot. So hot that you can't hold on to it after a few minutes. The blades wear out quickly, and they are expensive.

I've never liked trimming doors, even with a guide and a circ saw. But, I had bought the Rockler semi-flush trim bit for doing doors when it was on sale, and it works really well to quickly and accurately trim a door. If you do this often, I definitely reccomend it. Of course, you will have to take the door off of the hinges to trim it.Comment
