    New Unisaw

I just got back from my local Rockler and they have one of the new Unisaws all setup - shiny and new.

Its the first time I have seen one in the flesh and its real pretty - I gotta get me one of them - in my dreams.

It has a huge table surface area with loads of room in front of the blade. The controls are very smooth and easy to operate. The new setup for the riving knife is great with a lever in the front you can raise and lower or remove it with ease depending one wether you have a through or non through cut. The two part blade guard looks really good although no DC like the Shark Guard.

It would be a contender for top of my list following a lottery win but right now thats the only way I will ever get one

I crawled over the original proto-type at IWF last August when it was un-vieled at that Show. I got to see one about 4 hours ago at Woodcraft as I had to pick up a stick of QSWO to finish a hutch. You would have thought 130 board feet would have been enough. Make it 134 board feet and the last 4 BD cost $7.60 a foot. I almost choked as I pay around $4 a BF at my supplier but you have to order at least 30 BF as they cut it down the hill in their sawmill custom.

Anyhoo... nice saw even though Delta is still using the same swirl grind as the old Uni-saws. I prefer the newer style of grind that leaves the top baby butt smooth. Not a biggie but you kind of had to wax with the swirling grain on that type grind. The RK set-up is certainly nice. Many love both wheels in front but not a biggie for me.

But... a very nice saw and the trunnions are much better than the older Uni-saw which is a major plus.

I've found it interesting the new guard and RK setup was on the Bosch originally. I don't know if they didn't pattent it well enough or what, but I saw it on the Delta last year, then a craftsman, then a Ridgid and just this weekend on a Dewalt portable. RK was a little different on the Dewalt but the split guard thing is the same.
Incedentally, I had purchased the Bosch and it was in the mail when Rod had his accident. I really like the new guard and because it's so easy to use and get on/off, I actually use it. Only real problem with it is with my homemade push sticks. The kind I've made for myself aren't tall enough to clear the new guard. I just found an offset push stick this weekend at a local WW store. It was made by CMT I think, it off set's to the right and your hand is acutally over your fence. Seemed like it would work well. They wanted $20 for it, but I will probably get it. Well worth it to keep my fingers safe.
Heck, if saw stop had a guard that cool I think it would be the perfect saw. And since you can get the contractor model for around $1500, it would be on my shopping list eventually.
