    A Plane Question

I was asked to look at a very rusty Stanley Bench Plane. As I have had had some success is rescuing some rusty ones in the past. . .

This plane says Stanley Made in USA and 6557B. I can't find any reference to this number.

The funny thing is, that the guy who had it said it didn't work well. Maybe because it didn't have an iron. The sharpened chip breaker was lowered below the face.

There's a lot of info about Stanley planes at this site:

but I don't know if it will answer your question. Worth a try anyway.

Good plan! Cutting with the chip breaker keeps you from having to mess with those annoying ol' irons...

The only numbers I've seen like that on a Stanley were under the tote of some of the later ones made in the USA and on some of the block planes. maybe it is a Stanley Handyman plane. I'm not familiar with the markings on them.

I misread the number it is 0557B. It is 9 3/4" long with a 2" iron. Anyone know what it is?

Does the plane have Stanley marked just on the lever cap? Some Craftsman planes were made by Millers Falls, they have numbers on the side of the body with numbers like that.
Some people cannibalized other planes to cobble up a working one.

Hoover, I think you've got it! In addition to its other problems, the sole was not close to flat. I advised keeping it for parts.

              Thanks for your help, all.

That'd make it the equivalent size of a Stanley #4.
